81 images"We should refuse none of the thousand and one joys that the mountains offer us at every turn. We should brush nothing aside, set no restrictions. We should experience hunger and thirst, be able to go fast, but also know how to go slowly and to contemplate." —Gaston Rebuffat. Climbing is not a sport— it's a lifestyle. And climbers are not merely "players," they are a tribe. Select photographs of the tribe living the life. Please contact our office for information on stock licensing.

115 imagesThese images were produced for my recent book, Why We Climb. The book is a celebration of those aspects of the climbing life that are most universal, meaningful, and long-lasting— the strong connection to partners and nature; physical and mental mastery (and how to achieve it); the rewards of exploring oneself and the world through climbing. Through personal essays and interviews with some of the world’s best climbers, Why We Climb is a quest for the soul of climbing: What compels men and women to dedicate their lives to the challenges and deprivations of living in a vertical world? What are the sacrifices and the rewards? And most importantly, how can the lessons learned on cliff faces, frozen waterfalls, and alpine peaks— lessons of respect, discipline, commitment, humility, and simplicity— be brought home and used to benefit society as a whole? Why We Climb is published by Falcon and is available through local bookstores or online. All photography in this section is available for editorial licensing. Licensing for advertising and other commercial purposes requires prior permission. Please contact me directly to discuss terms.

133 imagesThese images are from my recent book, "Women Who Dare: North America's Most Inspiring Women Climbers, published by Falcon Guides, and available wherever books are sold. As world champion Sasha DiGiulian states, "This book offers an inspiring look at the world of female climbing, capturing the heart of the sport from a perspective not fully explored before—that of the women themselves. Working with Chris Noble on this project...helped me reflect on and articulate why climbing has become my life's passion." Please contact our office for information on stock licensing.
